Out-of-County Death Certificates

Indiana Code Title 16, Article 37 requires deaths to be reported within 72 hours. The funeral director files the certificate with the local health department, which in St. Joseph County is the office in South Bend. A copy goes to the state as well. Both offices have the record on file. Certified copies from St. Joseph County carry a raised seal and serve as legal proof of death for estate matters, insurance claims, and court proceedings.

Note: With the new out-of-county issuing ability, St. Joseph County can now provide death certificates that were originally filed in other Indiana counties too.

State-Level Death Records

The Indiana Department of Health maintains copies of death records from all Indiana counties. You can request records by mailing Form 49606 with payment, or through VitalChek online. State mail processing takes three to four weeks.

Since St. Joseph County now issues out-of-county death certificates, local residents may find it easier to go through the South Bend office instead of the state office for many requests. The Local Health Department Map shows contact information for every county health department in Indiana.
